IEP Urgent Care supports Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and we encourage you to take some important steps to help yourself and others.

According to the Susan G. Komen Foundation, 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. Breast Cancer Awareness Month is a great reminder to take action for yourself and others:

Understand your personal family history. The Susan G. Komen Foundation has created a way for you to compile this information so that you can share it with your doctor and better understand your risk.

Get Screened. If you have an average risk of developing breast cancer, based on your family history and lifestyle choices, it is recommended that you get screened for breast cancer annually. Before you forget, take a moment to schedule that test right now.

Be proactive about your health. Don’t smoke. Limit or curtail the use of alcohol. Maintain a healthy weight and exercise regularly. Discuss your overall health situation with your primary care physician during an annual wellness checkup. Be aware of any health concerns that may put you at a higher risk of developing breast cancer.

Encourage your friends and family to get screened. Set a good example by getting that annual breast exam and encourage your friends and family to do the same. Even though most of us know the importance of an annual breast exam, many women put it off for a variety of reasons. Your reminder and encouragement can make a difference and help someone schedule that screening before they forget.
