Choosing the right sunscreen can be confusing. Here’s some tips from the staff at IEP Urgent Care.

We’ve all shared this experience. You are standing in front of the sunscreen display and are faced with a multitude of brands, types, and SPF ratings. Here are some tips to help you make the right choice. “Regularly applying the right sunscreen, especially during these next few months when everyone is enjoying a Michigan Summer, is important for you and everyone in your family. And no matter the time of year, if you are exposing your skin outdoors, you should wear sunscreen,” said IEP Urgent Care medical director, Nick Dyc.
So, what is the right sunscreen? The American Academy of Dermatology created an excellent infographic to help make choosing the right sunscreen easier. Always select a broad-spectrum sunscreen that protects your skin against UVB and ultraviolet A (UVA) rays. The ultraviolet rays cause skin aging and wrinkles. An SPF of 30 or higher is considered good.
There are a lot of sites that review the best and most effective sunscreen products. A good place to start is The New York Times Wirecutter 4 Best Sunscreens of 2025.
The Two Types of Sunscreen
Also know that there are two types of sunscreens – mineral (which reflect the sun’s rays away from your skin) and chemical (which absorb UV rays and protects your skin).
There is some concern that chemical based sunscreens have negative health effects. According to an article about sunscreen safety in the New York Times, “if you’re concerned about potential safety issues with chemical sunscreens, but also want to protect your skin from harmful UV rays, mineral is best.
Once you’ve selected the proper sunscreen and SPF number, The CDC recommends that you apply it liberally to all areas of skin that are exposed to sunlight at least 15 minutes before you go outside. Be mindful of your activity level. Reapply after two hours, especially If you are sweating a lot or have gone swimming.
